The Ultimate Guide to Men's Overshirts

7 min

Something between a shirt and a jacket: Here's everything you need to know about one of the best trends in menswear.

WHAT IS AN OVERSHIRT?

A cross between a heavier jacket and a lighter shirt, the overshirt is a casual yet stylish outer garment that instantly elevates any man's appearance. The popularity of men's overshirts has grown significantly in recent years. Before delving into all things overshirts, let's first look at other examples of this growing menswear trend.

SHIRT-JACKET (A.K.A. "SHACKET")

Try not to overthink it. A shirt-jacket (or "shacket") is essentially the same as an overshirt. Some people might know the exact differences, if any, but with so many variations these days, how we incorporate these pieces into our wardrobe rotations is much more important than what we call the garment. Do you feel me?

CHORE JACKET

The chore jacket is slightly different from the overshirts and shackets mentioned earlier. It was initially designed as a functional garment with utility in mind (e.g., carpentry).

If Jesus were to choose an overshirt, He'd probably feel right at home with this one! Unlike a field jacket, the chore jacket is usually much lighter. Traditionally, it was made for home or workshops using rugged materials like tough canvas or denim.

The ruggedness of a traditional chore jacket is meant to prolong the garment's function rather than provide warmth. Wearing a chore jacket can add a touch of rugged sophistication to your outfit. Try wearing it like a casual overshirt and consider the textures of your other garments, as chore jackets often contain a fair amount of texture as well.

A HIGHLY VERSATILE PIECE

Overshirts are perfect for men to wear during the fall season. They are also great for mild winters, breezy spring days, or even summer nighttime events. If worn during the summer days, select a light and breathable fabric for the summer season to ensure that you don't sweat uncontrollably but have just enough coverage to shield you from the scorching sun.

Few other garments can be worn year-round, and the overshirt is an excellent example of how men can get the most out of a single wardrobe piece.

BEST BRANDS FOR OVERSHIRTS

If I were starting from scratch with my overshirt collection, I would begin with a tried-and-true denim option. Uniqlo's denim utility overshirt might be one of my favorite options at a very reasonable price; however, it sells quickly.

Additional options for various price points are as follows:

TIPS FOR PURCHASING YOUR FIRST OVERSHIRT

Neutral colors are always a great choice. Avoid black overshirts unless you're really set on owning one.

If you want versatility, choose charcoal, lighter gray, tan, khaki, navy blue, brown, or olive green. Make sure to consider the quality of the material and construction and check reviews from other customers. Also, think about the climate where you live and choose materials accordingly.

Check the sizing chart for the best fit, especially if you fall into the XS category. Look for features that meet your needs, such as functional or chest pockets.

Buyer beware! Always buy from a reputable site where you can read a review. Ensure the brand offers free returns and shipping if the item isn't quite right.

If you're unsure how to wear an overshirt, keep reading; we'll cover that next.

HOW TO STYLE AN OVERSHIRT (7 OUTFIT IDEAS FOR MEN)

OUTFIT #1: OVERSIZED STREET DENIM

Uniqlo

Boxy and slightly oversized overshirts are a great way to achieve a laid-back look, especially if you enjoy a more modern urban or "streetwear" style. Pair it with a ballcap for an ultra-casual vibe, and choose a clean pair of white sneakers for a touch of sophistication.

I've always been drawn to blue and green outfits because these two colors are next to each other on the color wheel and are considered analogous. When putting together ultra-casual outfits, considering color combinations can help ensure consistency in your overall look, even if it seems like you're trying to bend a few rules.

OUTFIT #2: EASTER SUNDAY SPECIAL

Bonobos

Neutral colors are always a great choice when you want to dress to impress. White, while not technically a color, is an excellent base that pairs well with other neutral colors to create striking outfits.

This outfit is a perfect example of a sophisticated look I would wear for Easter Sunday or brunch. The bold white pants complement the lighter khaki chore jacket, while the gray oxford-cloth button-down shirt (OCBD) fits in seamlessly with the jacket and trousers.

The German Army Trainer sneakers (GATs) incorporate three colors from the ensemble, allowing for cohesion without being too flashy on the feet. Elevate this look with tasteful accessories such as a matching wristwatch or hat, and you'll be all set for the day.

OUTFIT #3: PATTERNED COTTON CHORE

Banana Republic

Here is a similar look featuring the same white pants and GAT sneakers. Don't be afraid to use contrasting tones of brown to your advantage. This particular chore jacket is 100% cotton and has a lot of texture and pattern, which provides visual interest. The deep burgundy striped waffle shirt underneath also adds a bit of dimension.

Don't be afraid to be uniquely elegant if you feel the need to. An outfit like this will set you apart from all the other men who are looking to dress to impress for the fall season.

OUTFIT #4: FALL FLANNEL-ON-FLANNEL

Bonobos

Flannel is often associated with the fall season. This outfit includes a classic flannel overshirt in brilliant crimson red, a plaid flannel button-down shirt underneath, classic dark indigo jeans, and brown chukka boots.

It's a casual yet sophisticated way to use deeper shades and tones of colors to your advantage. Simple, timeless, and elegant. An outfit like this will look good for decades and is perfect for an autumn date with that lovely woman in your life.

OUTFIT #5: OLIVE DRAB

Vustra

Olive green and black make an elite color combination. In this outfit, the quilted pattern in the overshirt and steel gray in the boots elevate a casual look. Sometimes, less is more. Pairing steely dark olive green with jet black is a sleek and stylish way to stand out without trying too hard.

OUTFIT #6: MONOCHROMATIC SMART CASUAL

Bonobos

Monochromatic outfits make it easy to look great without worrying about matching different colors. In this outfit, I wear all green, including my dark olive green suede leather boots.

I have also written a separate article explaining why dark olive suede boots can be a great alternative to brown and black boots in a man's wardrobe. I still stand by that opinion today. You can read the article here.

OUTFIT #7: BUSINESS CASUAL

Bonobos

Yes, you can wear nicer overshirts in business casual settings. You don't have to buy an overshirt made of premium fabrics, but here's how to wear one in a somewhat professional setting.

Overshirts are not as formal as blazers or sport coats, so I suggest wearing something similar to this: a knit tie with a patterned dress shirt or an oxford cloth button-down (OCBD) shirt, classic neutral-colored chinos, suede oxford dress shoes or loafers, etc.

The dusty olive overshirt is crafted from high-quality cotton fabric and pairs perfectly with the suede dress shoes. The textured knit tie adds a professional yet laid-back touch, creating a simple, elegant, and timeless look.

DON'T SLEEP ON THE OVERSHIRT

Overshirts are versatile pieces that can add a unique element to your everyday look. With so many options, finding the perfect overshirt to fit your style and needs is easy. Check out the online reviews of the brands I suggested earlier to help you choose the best options.

As a buyer, you'll want something versatile that can be used in various settings. By following these tips and considering the top brands, you can make a purchase you will surely love and that will last for years to come.
